Just as the recent storm swept through the northwest the previous evening, City swept United away at the their home ground. It was a statement three-nil victory for their manager's side thanks to goals from Knaak, Bunny Shaw and Hemp. It was a display that firmly established their leadership claims as they consolidated their place at the WSL pinnacle.

Consecutive Defeats for Manchester United

This result marked successive Women's Super League losses for Skinner's side for the maiden instance since spring 2024, putting them a sizable gap off the table toppers with their championship aspirations hanging by a thread.

United’s capacity to juggle league and continental soccer with a thin squad has been a hotly discussed subject since they earned a place in the UCL. Reviewing the fixture list, it always felt like this was the period that would truly test this capability. Sadly for the opposition, they looked tired all game, the historic win against Paris Saint-Germain clearly having taken a toll.

Tactical Shifts

The United manager had attempted to freshen things up with a several adjustments. Toone, Terland, Dominique Janssen and Galton all added vigor, although the exclusion of the high-performing Melvine Malard to the sidelines was questioned.

City, in opposition, have fewer loading concerns. Jeglertz made a single alteration from their most recent win over the Toffees with Lauren Hemp making her initial starting appearance since healing from a fitness issue.

Overpowering Start

Opening Threats

Goals Galore

The clearest change came from the United manager at the break as Malard came on for Elisabeth Terland but by this time it was ineffective to shift the momentum of the contest. Ex- Manchester City player Jess Park came closest, striking the upright, but the away team were lacking in ideas and failed to produce a one shot on target.

The home side, on the other hand, could have increased their lead when a excellent Vivianne Miedema long ball sent Shaw away only for her to fail to convert but it mattered little to the winning team. After failing to beat any side who ended above them the previous campaign, Jeglertz’s side now have wins against Arsenal and United to position them in a commanding standing after the opening fixtures.
