RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory operated by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was believed to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountains just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft employed laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to strike a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... early reports indicate the target was engaged successfully," the ministry announced.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and resolve to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted surveillance missions over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group following its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in the year 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces who took part in this strike for their professionalism and their courage," Healey added. "Including them were a great many UK service members stationed over the holidays. This operation, to remove militants who endanger our safety, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, continuously, ensuring Britain's security within its borders and strong abroad."

During December, the United States armed forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" against IS targets in the country, subsequent to an attack killed two US troops and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still boasts an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in both countries.
